Radio K live from SXSW Day 3: Hot Lava
Posted on 3/20/2009
We topped off out three-day live broadcast here in Austin with a performance from Hot Lava. They talked about mummy beaches, how they got their name and the Richmond hardcore scene. Allison was a trooper and performed while sick! They were nice enough to write a Radio K jingle too!
Songs performed:
Blue Dragon
Lady Postman
Iggy
Mummy Beach
Itty Bitty Spaces
Radio K live from SXSW Day 3: These Arms Are Snakes
Posted on 3/20/2009
Perhaps the sweatiest and spittiest band we've had in, These Arms Are Snakes played an epic (and loud) set. They more than made up for the instudio they had to miss at Radio K in February when they were caught in a blizzard on the way to Minneapolis from Iowa City. They are heading home to Seattle soon after playing some shows on the west coast.
Songs performed:
Meet The Mayor
Woolen Heirs
Red Line Season
Ethric Double
Radio K live from SXSW Day 3: Turbo Fruits
Posted on 3/20/2009
Turbo Fruits were our third instudio of the day. Their session came at the end of their SXSW experience, and they'll be heading home soon to finish up their new 7" on Fat Possum and to work on their forthcoming second full-length. It's not really clear why they brought that can of pancake batter with them, or left this dirty band-aid, but...they did.
Songs performed:
Volcano
I Wanna Be Naked With You
Get Up Get On Down
Radio K live from SXSW Day 3: Javelins
Posted on 3/20/2009
Our second instudio session of the day came from Michigan natives Javelins. Dana and the crew chatted about their keyboard player's California Raisin shirt, touring, and all sorts of SXSW goodness. Here are some photos from the performance (see if you can spot the famous raisin...!)
Tune in later on today for performances from Turbo Fruits, These Arms Are Snakes, and Hot Lava. 104.5FM Mpls/St. Paul and streaming online at www.radiok.org.
Radio K live from SXSW Day 3: Midnight Masses
Posted on 3/20/2009
Day 3 of our SXSW broadcast has begun! HOORAY! We're looking forward to instudio performances from Javelins, Turbo Fruits, These Arms Are Snakes, and Hot Lava. We just finished up our first session of the day with Midnight Masses. Hailing mainly from Brooklyn, Midnight Masses features Jason of ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead (who happens to be the only member from Austin, TX). The gang formed last year around SXSW time right here in Jason's hometown. They're just wrapping up a tour with Trail of Dead. We were so fortunate to catch up with them here at SXSW.
Be sure to check back with www.radiok.org for a video of Midnight Masses' SXSW instudio performance, and stay tuned to Radio K all day for 4 more exclusive performances!
Radio K live from SXSW Day 2: All The Saints
Posted on 3/19/2009
All The Saints just wrapped up a LOUD session. They talked about their new EP (that they supposedly recorded Monday and Tuesday in their living room), complimented Jake on his mad station ID-reading skillz, discussed the differences between the Atlanta and Alabama music scenes, and debunked the nasty rumors going around that they are metal, AND the myth that they don't like to go by their last names.
Songs performed:
Closer, Owner
Farmacia
Regal Regalia
Half Red, Half Way
Radio K live from SXSW Day 2: Anni Rossi
Posted on 3/19/2009
Anni Rossi came in and performed a few songs for us today. When her drummer isn't with her (like today), she uses an old suitcase for a stomp box! She'll be coming back to Minneapolis soon - you can catch her in April at the 7th Street Entry. Here are pictures:
Songs performed:
Safety of Objects
Machine
Ecology
Wheelpusher
Radio K live from SXSW Day 2: Cotton Jones
Posted on 3/19/2009
Our 3rd performance of the day came from Cotton Jones. They arrived on the best. tour bus. ever. They've recently relocated to Michigan, and played at the Suicide Squeeze showcase the other night a SXSW. Here is a photographic journey:
Songs performed:
Gotta Cheer Up
Blood Red Sentimental Blues
Less Than Positive
Radio K live from SXSW Day 2: Superdrag
Posted on 3/19/2009
Our second instudio session today came from Superdrag. They did an acoustic performance and talked about their breakup/non-breakup of 2003. Here's a visual recap:
Songs performed:
Only Want a Place I Can Stay

Everything'll Be Made Right
Radio K live from SXSW Day 2: Maserati
Posted on 3/19/2009
We made it to day 2 of our SXSW broadcast! Our first instudio performance of the day came from Maserati, an instrumental band. They played some new (and as yet untitled) songs, and were very good sports about having to load in at 8:30 in the morning. Their drummer, Jerry also sported a nice shirt with puppies on it. If you're into the instrumental jams, make sure to check out Now Like Photographs every Wednesday from 7-9pm on Radio K.
Songs performed:
No More Sages
Untitled 1
Untitled 2
Monoliths
Radio K live from SXSW Day 1: Future of the Left
Posted on 3/18/2009
Our last session of day 1 at SXSW in Austin, TX came from Future of the Left. They talked in pretty accents about not being able to say "Anglo Saxon language" on the radio. We didn't really understand the Welsh slang, but either way they behaved themselves for the performance. They're playing three shows in a row on Friday! And we thought WE had a packed schedule! Here's what they looked like:
Songs performed:
Arming Eritrea
Chin Music
Land of My Formers
Small Bones, Small Bodies
Radio K live from SXSW Day 1: Benjy Ferree
Posted on 3/18/2009
Benjy Ferree came in to play on Radio K's SXSW live broadcast on Wednesday and he brought his pal Drew along. Benjy and Drew shared some stories with us about growing up on gospel music and playing in church. Somehow the subject of whistling puberty came up - Benjy is a GREAT whistler. Here are some pictures from the session!
Songs performed:
I Get No Love
Big Business
The Grips
Fear
Radio K live from SXSW Day 1: Julie Doiron
Posted on 3/18/2009
Julie Doiron just played live on Radio K from SXSW in Austin, TX. Even though she broke a guitar string and got distracted by her cell phone ringing, her performance was awesome. She was so friendly and talkative that we barely even noticed. Time for some photos...
Songs performed:
Dark Horse
Tailor
Blue
Radio K live from SXSW Day 1: Rafter
Posted on 3/18/2009
Rafter just finished performing live from SXSW. He's quite the exuberant character! He brought a drummer, backup vocalist and a saxophone player with him...and apparently pretty much every song he performs is "about sex and love." Except for Zzzpenchant, which, according to Rafter, is about the end of the world. Here are some photos from the session for your viewing enjoyment:
Songs performed:
Fruit
Sampler
Noise
Zzzpenchant
Thunder
Sassy
Radio K live from SXSW Day 1: {{{ SUNSET }}}
Posted on 3/18/2009
{{{ SUNSET }}} just finished performing live from SXSW. They were the first to perform on our SXSW broadcast, and we are thankful to them for being our guinea pigs and playing an awesome session! They will be heading out on tour in a couple months (although probably not in the veggie oil car this time...it broke down on their last tour), and Bill Baird may or may not end up taking ballroom dancing lessons this year.
Be sure to check back later for a video of their in-studio performance!
Here are some photos from the session for your viewing enjoyment:
Songs performed:
Lunar Eyes
The Past Just Won't Forget Me
Late Night, Early Morning
Loveshines II
Radio K live from SXSW Day 1: Cale Parks
Posted on 3/17/2009
Cale Parks just finished performing live from SXSW. He's doing a bunch of shows solo during SXSW - just him, his laptop and some drums. He'll be releasing a new album in 2009, and is playing the Polyvinyl Records showcase Friday in Austin along with Asobi Seksu, Loney Dear and Headlights. Here are some photos from the session for your viewing enjoyment:
Songs performed:
Two Haunt Me
Places We've Created
We Can Feel It
Every Week Ends
Radio K at SXSW
Posted on 3/09/2009
Dear Diary,
Machen, Jake, Amy, Dana and I arrived in Austin for Radio K’s SXSW broadcast yesterday around 10PM. We were all delirious! It was oh so ridiculous and great. Monday night consisted of Austin foods, Austin hotel check-ins, and Austin smiles. Today we scoped out the studio where we will be broadcasting from tomorrow. We set up the on-air-studio in Andrew’s freakin’ dining room. It rules! For the first time ever, we will DJ in a room with a window. And on this window, there are curtains. And on those curtains, there are monkeys. And on those monkeys, there is love. And the love just goes all around all around, the love just goes all around (through the airwaves, hopefully!)
The studio where the bands will be playing.
We also booked a few more in-studio sessions for our SXSW broadcast: Benjy Ferree, Midnight Masses (…And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead side project), and Julie Doiron! Stay tuned to Radio K for more SXSW updates, instudio sessions, and exclusive picz!
Machen, Radio K's marketing director, bringing bags of merch into the studio.
TTYL BFFL,
Love always forever and ever,
Aimee
